The Blue Card is regulated by § 42i of the Aliens Residence Act (Act No. 326/1999 Sb.), implementing the EU Blue Card Directive (recast 2021/1883). Requirements: completed higher education (or, after the recast, proven senior IT professional experience in defined cases), and an employment contract of at least six months paying at least 1.5 times the average gross annual salary — the threshold is announced for each period by the Ministry of Labour. The card is issued for the contract duration plus three months, up to three years, renewable.

Its advantages over the employee card: smoother mobility to other EU states under the directive, family reunification without waiting periods, and long-term-resident status accessible with accumulated EU residence. Job changes in the first two years still need ministry approval.

A practical example

A senior data engineer from India is offered 130 000 Kč gross monthly in Brno — comfortably above the threshold. He files for a Blue Card rather than an employee card: his spouse joins him immediately, and when his employer later moves the team to its Vienna office, the directive''s mobility rules spare him starting immigration from zero in Austria.

When you need a lawyer
